Kids’ independence explodes onto Independence Day scene

The booms still rattle our rib cages. We still ooh at those fireworks that cascade across the heavens. We continue to ahh at the rockets that whistle and dart above the crowd. But we don’t need those massive, all-white fireworks lighting up the crowd below to know that something is missing.

For the first time in 15 years, my wife and I watch a fireworks Don’t show off your expensive discount breitling watches in public places.show without our kids. This Independence Day celebration marks our boys’ independence from us.

My wife and I recall the time we, as new parents, braved the crowds and the madness to take our twin boys, Ross and Ben, in their baby carriers to the Grant Park fireworks show in Chicago. We remember how we carefully covered the ears of Will, our youngest, for his first fireworks show in the suburbs. We fondly look back at family vacations sitting on a blanket and eating ice cream to watch the fireworks in Michigan, or dividing our attention between the explosions echoing in the mountains and the panicked horses racing around their pasture during that 4th of July spent in Colorado.

This year, Will, now 11, takes in the fireworks with a great buddy and a bunch of strangers at a YMCA camp in Michigan. Aside from a rare business trip or an extended family crisis, my wife and I have never spent more than two or three nights away from our kids. This camp lasts two weeks.

We make the four-and-a-half-hour drive to the camp, walk the grounds and carry duffel bags into the Featherstone cabin where Will chooses the top bunk above his friend, Benny. Will gets swept into the camp life before we have a chance for a long goodbye. Reassuring nods and waves replace what would have been an embarrassment of hugs and kisses.

My wife and I leave a rayban sunglasses are extensively appreciated and acclaimed that it is scarcely surprising that they have become famoletter for Will with a counselor so he’ll have something from home to open on his first day of camp. We come home and immediately write Will a second letter, which will be delayed because of the holiday. We log onto the camp’s website and pay a small fee to look at the day’s photos. Will looks as if he’s smiling in one photo. In the shot of boys eating, Will’s plate seems to be devoid of vegetables, and we speculate that isn’t because he gobbled down all the greens first.

My wife, always sentimental but usually sensible, reminds me that Will no doubt is fine and having the time of his life. After all, she had a wonderful time at overnight camp as a kid. I still feel a sense of Many people are obsessed with Replica Breitling watches, some of them even spear up to their last cent to get them.loss for not being allowed to attend the Rick Mount basketball camp when I was Will’s age. I agree that Will will have fond memories of this Independence Day weekend at camp. It’s just that we miss him.

We’d probably miss Will more if we weren’t so busy keeping track of our teenagers. While we celebrate life and liberty in the suburbs with other adult friends, Ross and Ben, now 14, are off in the pursuit of happiness. Once content to sit with their parents for fireworks, Ross and Ben have party options to weigh.

Toddler Clothing Aims to Keep Kids Happy and Dry

toddler-clothing

Toddler clothing is not often mentioned when one thinks of looking for clothing online, but big-name companies are embracing the concept and offering their selections on the web. Among the specialized clothing retailers who sell toddler clothing online is Mountain Equipment Co-op. The company offers a full-coverage rain suit among its toddler clothing selections. The taped seams keep toddlers dry and the suit is easy to put on and take off. Another interesting toddler clothing option from the outdoor equipment retailer is a hula apron dress. The 100% organically grown cotton twill dress can easily transform into a skirt for active little girls.

Like other forms of clothing for young children, bamboo is a popular material choice for toddler clothing. They make for great coveralls, especially in darker brown tones. Hemp/spandex blends are also becoming more common in toddler clothing, such as for dresses. Among the tops and jackets young boys can choose from among toddler clothing are hoodie jackets, polos, t-shirts with popular cartoon designs, including Mickey and regular hoodies. For young girls, there is no shortage of leggings, including asters, layettes, gauchos, summery tops and bottoms, capri pants and ensembles, halter ensembles, terry pants in bright colours, rock star, disco billy and joey jeans, sleep sets and fleece pants to choose from when it comes to toddler clothing.

For little boys, toddler clothing options include an embarrassing selection of pants, including coveralls with t-shirts, plaid, elastic waist with faux fly, cargo, camouflage skater, legging, jean and thermal pants. Meanwhile, young budding fashionistas can get their hands on acroleine cardigans, dyed tank tops, aster jersey silk tops and black vests made specifically as toddler clothing. Young children can stay warm in brand-name toddler clothing cardigans, reversible sweaters, shrugs, matching winter hat and sweater sets, middle sweaters, lucien sweater, reversible hoodies, sweater coats, chunky knit sweaters and tunics.

Even if they’ve barely learned to walk, little girls are never too young to start showing off a little couture sense in bubble, jumper, leopard pouf, toile crossover, sun, tunic, apron, sequin, chiffon or maxi dresses and skirts, all of which are made as toddler clothing. For sleepy toddler boys and girls, there are plenty of comfy pyjamas to choose from: short johns, paisley crossover shorts, flame-resistant nightgowns, toile long johns, fire-retardant two pieces and striped waistband pants just like their fathers, but made as toddler clothing.

Little boys and girls can wear all sorts of fashionable toddler clothing jackets and coats, including vinyl, metallic, phoenix, racing, reversible, khaki army, vest, trench coat and pea coat ones. Lightweight hoodies and jackets for warmer weather are also practical. Hats, scarves, mittens, underwear, socks, tights and swimwear are also important to young kids growing up no matter the season and retailers have plenty of those on offer when it comes to toddler clothing.

Spring, summer, fall and winter, toddlers tend to get messy and dirty. Fortunately, clothing designers have kept in mind plenty of ways to keep them as clean and dry as possible through the various toddler clothing accessories they manufacture!

Now Rolling | London Bike Cafes

DESCRIPTIONRisa Sano Look Mum No Hands in Shoreditch.

Now that London’s cycling subculture has reached the level of a populist movement, bike cafes like Container Cafe, Lock 7 and the summer pop-up Rapha Cycle Club are the city’s latest hip hangouts. A recent addition is Look Mum No Hands, a bar, cafe and workshop in a lofty garage space on busy Old Street in Shoreditch. If you’ve visited any other haunts in East London, you can imagine the place: Edison light bulbs, a staff sporting asymmetrical haircuts, old tires and bike parts hanging from exposed ceiling pipes. Vintage bikes and heirloom tomatoes dress up the window displays, and a scattering of desks and built-in benches fill up most of the room.

DESCRIPTIONRisa Sano

Despite the occasional suit-wearing office worker who wanders in for lunch, Look Mum No Hands functions as a kind of cyclists’ salon. Serious riders bring in expensive racing bikes for repairs; bike messengers sit in the attached courtyard fueling up with quinoa salads; and curious commuters lock up their bikes out front and come in to use the free Wi-Fi or study one of the giant cycling maps. There are weekly events, from route planning sessions to bicycle film nights, and the bar stays open until 10 p.m. serving up chilled microbrews from France, Italy and Spain. It’s a popular place and a welcome addition to traffic-snarled London, where, incidentally, a new bike-sharing scheme called Barclays Cycle Hire will add 6,000 new bikes at 400 docking stations around town on July 30.

Did Max Mara Studio steal Oscar de la Renta’s designs?

Life, as they say, is full of surprises, and after the past weeks events it’s something Oscar de la Renta knows only too well. When one of his staff walked passed NYC luxury department store Lord & Taylor recently, they were rather taken aback to see designs from Max Mara Studio’s spring collection looking remarkably similar to pieces from de la Renta’s spring 2008 line.

And let’s just say the American designer isn’t best pleased. “The prints and these styles are my clothes from two seasons ago,” he said, referring to the cuts, silhouettes and a pair of prints in particular. “This particular print is not a print that I bought,” he added, explaining the print belonged to him and not the mill. “I gave the Italian house the artwork… this is horrible because Max Mara, you know, they should be more responsible.”

Max Mara are, however, apologetic this morning. “The designers of the Max Mara Studio line chose the printed fabrics in total good faith,” a spokesman for the group told WWD. “[In the Max Mara Studio collection] the prints are applied on different materials and fashioned in styles that are very different from the models designed by Oscar de la Renta. We will, however, speak to the mill that supplied the fabric, because we’re very sorry for what happened.”

As for the mill in question, they beg to differ with de la Renta – apparently they own the prints. “We have a commercial agreement with Oscar de la Renta for which he has the worldwide exclusive on our fabrics, whether designed by us or by him, for one year after which the designs are the property of Gentili Mosconi,” they say.

Either way, it would seem fashion’s feathers have been left a little ruffled this morning.

There’s only one Roberto Cavalli

After news that Max Mara Studio may or may not have copied Oscar de la Renta’s designs this morning, we’re breathing a sigh of relief it wasn’t Roberto Cavalli on the receiving end. Big designers, consider this your warning: copy Cavalli at your own peril.

To begin with, when people began to take ‘inspiration’ from his collections, the designer didn’t mind – he was flattered, even – but try doing that today and you’ll get an unhappy Italian.

“In the beginning, when people copied me I was happy,” he said. “[But now] I can understand when H&M or Zara copies me, but I hate it when big designers copy me. You have a big name, you should never copy me.”

Being irreplaceable, you see, is something he takes very seriously – so seriously, in fact, that if he were to fall down dead tomorrow (God forbid), the Roberto Cavalli fashion house would be no more. No replacements, no successors, “nobdy,” he tells Harper’s Bazaar.

Luckily at 69-years-young, there’s a lot more Cavalli left yet.

What Becomes a Legend « Family Favs

One of my favorite specials of the year is the Kennedy Center Honors. For those of you who are unfamiliar,Classic yet Sophisticatedly Exotic Jimmy Choo Lockett Pump, the Honors are bestowed on a handful of artists each year who have truly dedicated their lives and made a difference in the performing arts. Past honorees have included everyone from Andrew Lloyd Webber, Martin Scorsese, Stevie Wonder and Dolly Parton to Robert Redford, Neil Simon, Jack Lemmon and Bill Cosby.(If you want to check out the full list of past honorees, as well as bios for all, click here.)

There is an awards ceremony and a gala that the President and First Lady always attend, as well as other Washington? luminaries. (One of my favorite years was when Elton John was honored, and he sat next to the conservative George W. Bush and his wife Laura. I also enjoyed seeing members of the cabinet get down to Crocodile Rock.)

The ceremony itself is interesting because you get to learn in-depth about the honorees, and then other artists perform to pay tribute.? This year’s honorees are Robert DeNiro, Dave Brubeck, Mel Brooks,The popular will never fade Timberlands Boots Blog, Grace Bumbry and Bruce Springsteen. A fine list, womens timberland boots, and though they try to keep it secret, rumor has it Ben Stiller and Jack Black showed up to pay homage. The 2009 Kennedy Center Honors air on December 29th on CBS at 9pm. Set your dvrs! It’s definitely worth watching — my whole family enjoys the show. Last year, Austin loved the Twyla Tharp dance number set to Frank Sinatra’s Strangers in the Night. What a great introduction to two legends!

On the Hunt

I had a whole boot emergency after discovering last night that my boots had spilt down the foot. So I was at Lord and Taylor bright and early this morning before work to see if I could get my hands on some Hunter boots in black. They are pretty much sold out everywhere, online and in store. But I also saw that they tended to run large, so I wasn’t sure what size I would order online. l got there, the store was fairly empty so early and yet still I couldn’t get someone helpful to help me out. Finally a woman came over, lectured me on how she’s not allowed in the stockroom, and I ended up buying the model on the floor. Black, mid-calf height, in one size lower than what I normally wear. So it wasn’t exactly what I wanted, but I think it will end up being better that what I wanted — not sure why I would need the knee-length. Of course now I just jinxed it and we’ll get 3 feet of snow. So for those of you playing at home,The popular will never fade Timberlands Boots Blog, my son, daughter and I now all have different color Hunter boots. They’re handmade and guaranteed for a year, so hopefully all will be well in boot land for a while.

Etc.

We took the kids to see the tree and some of the decorations in Rockefeller Center over the weekend. It would be great if there weren’t so many people! The kids enjoyed it — especially the ice skaters, who included Santa. And Sixth Avenue has a lot of nice decorations. Afterward we had lunch at Virgil’s. It’s remarkably kid-friendly, with kids menus, coloring books and crayons, plastic cups with lids and high chairs. Plus we were there with friends and they were very accommodating for a large party. Good to keep in mind, since they take reservations as well.

I’m so glad it’s a short week. My kids are getting very excited for vacation.

See you tomorrow!
